Technology Transfer

PRA offers a variety of education options to expand your knowledge and expertise in petroleum system modelling, risk, play, and play fairway analysis. Comprehensive education is available in petroleum concepts as well as PRA's software programs. Our expert staff teach customized courses based on your priorities as well as standardized training focusing on our software programs. Furthermore, we can accommodate a range of class sizes from one-on-one to a large group. Our instructors will travel to your offices or teach courses at our facilities in Boulder, CO or Houston, TX.
Instructors combine oral presentation, hands-on computer workshops, and discussion to best meet the needs of course participants. These methods serve to both elucidate technology used in the program as well as familiarize the user with the application. Introductory courses are quite comprehensive and cover theory as well as operation of the software. We have seen that more experienced users also benefit from the basic courses, as there are many options in the programs that are under-utilized.
The following is an example of possible content for a training course.
The Application of BasinMod and BasinView to Resource Plays
PRA's petroleum systems technical training course addresses the uncertainties and risks associated with the critical geologic elements and processes required for hydrocarbon accumulations to exist. The goal of training is to develop the participants' capabilities and to provide them with a better understanding of hydrocarbon charge risks. Specific items to be covered include timing of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, and migration, as well as an analysis of the secondary hydrocarbon migration and trapping mechanisms.
Course participants will learn how to evaluate resource plays through participation in the following:- Review source rock and calibration data for applicability.
- Construct and calibrate BasinMod 1-D models to determine timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion from source rocks.
- Build a BasinView project for evaluation of basin development, timing of hydrocarbon generation and expulsion on a basin scale.
- Apply BasinFlow to the BasinView project for evaluation of secondary and tertiary hydrocarbon migration. Determine the direction of hydrocarbon migration within the area of interest, and the regions most conducive for trapping to occur.
- Develop and calibrate BasinMod 2-D models from a seismic line.
- Analyze the detailed hydrocarbon history of several prospects (hydrocarbon distribution, timing of reservoir fill, seal capacity, etc.) using BasinMod 2-D, a state-of-the-art 2-D fluid-flow simulator.
- Address uncertainties and determine the probability of hydrocarbon charge using the stochastic methods of BasinMod Risk. Assess the probability of recoverable hydrocarbon volumes by applying uncertainties to migration and trapping conditions.
